Paul Huet, Vieilles maisons sur le port de Honfleur
Etching, 1866
Alongside his paintings and watercolours, Paul Huet was also a printmaker. He published his first lithographs in 1829 and his first etchings in 1834. He died in 1869, and both my examples of his etched work date from his last years (both reprinted in 1911). The first is a charming but rather conventional scene of the harbour at Honfleur.
Paul Huet, Soirée d'été - les baigneuses
Etching, 1867
The second is something else entirely. It anticipates much of the Impressionist style in its fresh, loose approach, and its fascination with the play of light and shade. I can't help feeling Paul Cézanne must have known this etching (or the painting of the same subject displayed at the Salon of 1866), as its dreamlike scene of bathers disporting themselves in a river on a summer's evening seems to anticipate his own treatment of similar scenes.

Neil, great to have you back! Do you suppose those trees reminded Cezanne of his family home at Jas-de-Bouffan or am I just very suggestible?
This goes in the I can't believe this category: The only reason I'd ever heard of Paul Huet before your piece is that a friend of my mother had an old print of a scene quite similar to your first illustration. It was framed in one of those elaborate gilded frames that people liked. How it got to Kansas or from there to upstate New York, I have no idea - or what happened to it when the owner died twenty years ago. I didn't much care for it because it was so dark but I know it was this woman's rpize possesion/ More, please.
Hi Jane, What an interesting connection. It's just stylistic similarities that make me feel Cezanne was influenced by Huet's bathers, but I do think it very likely. I did post a piece about Daubigny the other day, in this same longrunning series of The Pre-Impressionists, but for some reason blogger put it up as posted in January!
Neil, if you started working on it in January, that's when they post it. You could try "force" changing it. Thanks for alerting me - I'll check it out. Thanks.
Jane, with Huet I just changed one word and it then posted it at the correct date, so I know now not to simply click Post.
