I knew of the Nazi's degenerate art exhibitions but it's only with the addition of the names of the artists can you start to understand the life changing horror these people went through.Spannerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14317277045630419534noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-340634554199883217.post-5687855513409222122017-01-11T17:48:37.932+00:002017-01-11T17:48:37.932+00:00Another thought I have about these prints and the ...Another thought I have about these prints and the artists who made them is that there's nothing "degenerate" in the works, certainly not when compared to what was happening to social and political life at the time. I'm sure Expressionism was in part a reaction to sentimentality in art. If Jugendstil decayed into a winsome sentimentality, German Symbolism transformed into this very powerful new art.<br />Neilhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18020242863144175965noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-340634554199883217.post-37806327774594498872017-01-10T19:01:08.532+00:002017-01-10T19:01:08.532+00:00Welcome back, Neil. It was published in Munich from 1896 until the early days of WWII but after about 1900, its freshness and experimentalism were replaced by such saccharine sentimentality, enough to give the viewer a toothache. I'm sure books have been written about this but I noticed the change when I looked through the entire set of issues (available online through the University of Heidelberg Archives. You may know that they have also digitized Ver Sacrum and Pan and lots else.) The disconnect between this "mainstream" art and Expressionist art is most obvious in the portrayals of people. The "mainstream" art has been sanitized of genuine human feeling, replaced by blandness.Jane Librizzihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03943563452168571716noreply@blogger.com
